How Long Does it Take to Paint a 2-Storey House?

If you need your home painted, you may have wondered how long it will take to get the job done. More specifically, you might be curious about the length of time it would take to paint a 2-storey house.

The answer depends on a few things, which will get into next to help you get an idea of how long you can expect it to take to have your home painted.

Factors That Affect Interior House Painting

There are a few variables that play a role in how long it will take to paint your home:

Furniture – Lots of furniture pieces will require some time to either move them out of the way or cover them to protect them from getting any paint splatter on them.

Repair work – If your walls are covered in dents, scrapes, scratches, or holes, the surface will need to be repaired first before the painting can begin.

Number of rooms. The overall size of your home and the number of rooms that you want painted will have a direct impact on the time it will take to complete the job.

Crown moulding, decorative baseboards, and other detailed surfaces. A flat surface is easy enough to paint, but surfaces that have lots of crevices and other details can take a lot longer to paint to get the job done right.

Time Needed to Paint an Interior

If you want the interior of your home painted, how long will it take? Generally speaking, a 2-storey home that’s around 1,500 to 2,000 square feet will take about 3 to 5 days to paint, depending on the variables mentioned above. However, if you only have 1 room to paint, you can expect it to be done in about a day or two.

But if you want your entire home painted from top to bottom, you may need several days to complete the job, which would require a whole team of painting professionals to get it done. In general, though, the interior painting job should be done within 2 to 4 days or within a week’s time.

Time Needed to Paint an Exterior

What if you need the outside of your home painted? In this case, it will likely take longer compared to an interior paint job. That’s because there are other variables involved that wouldn’t be an issue with interior painting. For instance, the weather will directly impact the time needed to paint an exterior wall.

That said, there’s not the same type of prepping that would be needed for an interior paint job, such as covering the floors or furniture or sealing off interior doorways.

Generally speaking, an exterior paint job should take anywhere from 7 to 10 days, though a much larger home with extra-tall walls may take longer. A smaller home, on the other hand, can take less than a week to complete.
