How to choose the best paint colour for your home

How to choose the best paint colour for your home

With so many paint colours to choose from, how do you pick just one for your home? You want to be able to choose a colour that you love, but also one that is suitable for your home and all its furnishings.

And while you can always repaint your home if you find that the initial colour that you chose doesn’t turn out the way you had hoped, it’s best to choose wisely from the get-go to avoid any unnecessary and costly work after the fact.

So, how do you pick the best paint colour for your home?

Choose a Tone That Matches the “Feeling” You Want For the Space

There’s a level of psychology that comes with colours. The tone that you choose to cover your interior walls with will give off a certain vibe. Many professionals advise choosing a colour based on the mood you want to give off and how a room is used.

For example, rooms like kitchens, dining rooms, and family/living rooms — where socializing is common — should be painted in warm colours, such as pale yellow or cranberry. These colours are more inviting and stimulating.

Rooms that are meant for more privacy — such as bedrooms and home offices — would fare better in cooler hues, like blue or sage green. These colours are more calming.

Be Mindful of Flow in an Open Floor Plan

If you have an open concept floor plan and want different paint colours in each room, you will have to be careful with where and how you will stop one colour and continue on with another without making the space look choppy.

Continuity and flow are important. If you choose to go with the same colour, there are no issues to deal with. But if you want different colours in different rooms, consider where you’ll make the divisions. That said, different paint colours can be a great way to create “zones” within a home.

Consider the Size of the Room

If the room you want to have painting is a bit on the small size, consider going for paint colours that are a little lighter. Dark colours tend to make a space seem smaller and tighter, which might not be a great idea for a room that already on the small side. In this case, lighter colours may work better to open a space up.

On the other hand, if you’re working with a much larger room, you have the freedom to go for darker tones without risking the room appearing too small.

Choose a Colour Scheme That Matches Your Furniture

Begin by choosing about 3 different colours from an object in your home. For example, a throw pillow from the living room couch or a painting on the wall might help guide you in the right direction. Then, find some sample strips with these tones to give you a few options to choose from.

Choose one of these paint colours as the colour to paint your walls, and save the others for use around the room in furniture or fabrics. If you’re also going to be painting other adjacent rooms, use the same colour sample strips and choose another tone.
