How to Prepare Your House For Painting
When painting your home, the prep work is just as important as the paint job itself. If you’re ready to have your home painted, you’ll want to take some steps to get the room and the actual surface to be painted ready for the job.
Ideally, you’ll want to first hire professionals in painting to guarantee a job well done rather than taking the risks that come with a DIY approach. But you still have a role to play when it comes to getting your home ready to be painted.
Here are some steps to take before you apply that first coat of paint.
Remove Hooks From Wall Hangings
Not only should you remove any artwork or photos that you have hanging on the wall, but you will also want to get rid of any hooks and other apparatus that is affixed to the wall to anchor the wall hangings. Although you may be able to paint around them, their presence will just make the work more difficult and cumbersome.
Remove or Cover Furniture
All furniture should either be removed or covered in order to avoid getting any paint on them. But in addition to protecting these items, removing them will also make it a lot easier to move around the room. A clear space will also make more room for all the equipment needed to complete a paint job.
Remove Drapes
Take down any window treatments that will get in the way of painting your home. This will also avoid the risk of any paint getting on the drapery.
Make Necessary Repairs on the Surface Being Painted
If there are any scuffs, dents, or holes in the walls that you are painting, they’ll need to be repaired before the job starts. This will ensure that you have a smooth surface to paint over. Otherwise, these imperfections will be very noticeable after you’ve painted. This job can involve anything from a simple sanding to more involved jobs that first require the holes to be filled and smoothed over.
Clean the Space
It might be a good idea to give the room that’s being painted a deep cleaning job so you don’t inadvertently paint over any dust or any other debris. Plus, any of that dust laying around can eventually become airborne and settle on the surface of the new paint before it’s had the chance to dry.
If you hire professional house painters to paint your home for you, most of these steps will be taken care of.
