What is the difference between a contractor and regular painter?

Painting a home or business might sound simple enough, but the job can be a lot more challenging than you might think. For this reason, it may be best to employ the services of a professional.

But when doing so, should you hire a regular painter or a painting contractor? What’s the difference between the two?

Painting Contractors Vs. Regular Painters

A painter is basically an individual who has the equipment and skill-set needed to complete painting projects. For example, they might have a ladder, scaffolding, and a variety of painting apparatus to actually apply the paint to the surface.

Painters could be from all walks of life. For instance, they could be college students who paint as a way to supplement their income to cover tuition and living costs. Or, they could be full-time painters who work for themselves and tackle painting projects as they come their way.

A professional painting contractor, on the other hand, can be differentiated from regular painters in that they have a more business-like approach to their operations. That means they tend to come with all the insurance and other coverages that remove all liabilities from their clients. That means if something happens while in your home, you will not be on the hook for any liabilities.

Professional painting contractors carry both workers’ compensation and general liability policies to cover personal injury and accidental damages.

They may also offer satisfaction guarantees in case the client is not fully satisfied with their work, especially if the final result is sub-par.

In this way, contractors can offer higher-quality painting services and the peace of mind of knowing that they’re protected. Further, having a painting contractor buy all the paint will eliminate the possibility of any disputes about low-quality paint. That means if the wrong paint was purchased or it turns out to be poor quality, it’s the contractor who will deal with the local supplier on your behalf, not the client.

Contractors have standards that they must meet, which should give clients some comfort knowing that the painting job will always be top-notch.

Why Hire a Painting Contractor?

Here are just some of the reasons why you should consider hiring a painting contractor instead of a regular painter:

• Insurance coverage
• Fully warranted work
• Full suite of tools and equipment needed for the job
• Detailed contracts
• Extensive product knowledge
• Variety of application methods
• Comprehensive website
• Full team of painters
• Proven system

Of course, not all painting contractors are created equal. Some are better than others. Homeowners and business owners would be well-advised to do a little homework on the contractors they intend to hire and scope out their track record.
