Do I Need to Prime Aluminum Siding Before Painting?

If your home’s exterior is look a little worn down, it might be time to take steps to give it a bit of a face lift. But rather than undertaking a big, expensive renovation project to revamp the look of your home, consider a much more affordable and less comprehensive exterior house painting job instead.

No matter what type of material your exterior walls are made of, giving them a fresh coat of paint can breathe new life into your exterior. That includes aluminum siding. With the help of professional painters, your home can be quickly transformed with a few brushes of paint.

But there are a few questions you might have before diving into an exterior house painting job. In addition to the paint colour, you might also be wondering whether or not your aluminum siding needs to be primed first before you can apply your chosen paint colour.

Do I Need to Prime Aluminum Siding Before Exterior House Painting?

Before you paint your home’s exterior, it’s important to make sure that the surface is properly prepared first. That way, you can make sure that the final result is as close to perfect as possible. Without some prep work beforehand, you risk allowing any imperfections to show through after the final coat of paint is applied.

Ideally, your home’s aluminum siding should be primed before it’s painted. All that’s typically required is one coat of primer, after which a couple of coats of paint can be applied once the primer has thoroughly dried.

But even before the primer is applied, there are a couple of other steps that should be taken first, including the following:

Inspect the aluminum siding for imperfections. There are plenty of things to keep an eye out for and rectify before the primer is applied. These include things such as the presence of mold, mildew, and lead. If any of these are found, they should be dealt with by a professional before any other steps are taken.

Sand down and wash the siding. Once the above issues have been ruled out or dealt with, it’s important to make sure the surface is completely smooth before the primer and paint is applied. This includes things such as peeling paint, dents, cracks, and other flaws that could show through.

For this reason, it’s always a good idea for the surface to be sanded down to ensure a smooth surface. Following this, the siding should be thoroughly washed with a pressure washer and wiped down.

After these steps are taken, you should be left with a smooth, clean, dry surface that’s ready to be primed. And once the siding has had a primer applied, it’s time for the good part: the application of your paint colour of choice!

If your home’s exterior is covered in aluminum siding that’s in need of a face lift, consider having an exterior house painting job done by professionals to make your home look as good as new!
